At Buttercream we do so much more than cakes and cookies. We offer fresh baked goods, warm from the oven, every morning.  From scones to kouign amann to croissants and beyond we can start your day off right with a satisfying breakfast and delicious coffee from our partners at Compass Coffee. House made syrups and Organic dairy are here to perfectly complement your coffee or espresso.

Our cakes, cookies and confections are the main event at Buttercream Bakeshop. Satisfy your mid day sweet tooth or pick up a cake or box of treats to share with friends. Our gourmet sweets are a delicious and thoughtful way to show you care. We like to think of cake as a required ingredient to a happy life, not just for birthdays, which only come once a year! Whether you are entertaining guests, or looking to be the office hero, a box of goodies from Buttercream Bakeshop will be sure to have everyone smiling. Besides using the highest quality ingredients, local whenever possible, each cake and is baked from scratch and hand decorated to perfection.

We are open seven days a week in the Shaw neighborhood at 1250 9th Street NW in Washington, DC. We look forward to your visit!

Our Story

Owning a shop known for quality, excellence and small batch baking has been a career-long dream for Pastry Chef Tiffany MacIsaac. A place where imagination and technique combine to create desserts that are delicious and inspired. As luck would have it, Tiffany met Alexandra Mudry-Till, an immensely talented cake decorator and macaron magician, with the same commitment to quality.  But they needed to fill one more important piece of the puzzle.  Enter GM Emma Shaver, a lover of exceptional customer service and sweets.  Tiffany decided that she had the perfect team to make the dream a reality.

So, with these principles in mind, Buttercream Bakeshop was born: Scratch-baked cakes, cookies and confections beyond your wildest dreams.  Whether it’s a baby shower, birthday cake for someone age 1 or 100, or a spectacular wedding, nothing will cap off the occasion as sweetly as a cake or pastry from Buttercream Bakeshop.

Our Process

At Buttercream Bakeshop we love what we do and have a lot of fun doing it. It helps that we happen to think we have the best job in the world. Our main goal is making people happier one slice of cake or pie or cookie at a time. It doesn’t get much better than that!

But don’t let our on-the-job-fun fool you. Our playful menu and whimsical ways are deeply rooted in years of training, commitment to the process, and the desire to make sure that everything you taste is as fresh and delicious as it can be. We scratch-bake everything in the shop and every single order, every day from the finest ingredients available. We work with local farms and markets to procure the best produce, when possible.

Our recipes have been developed over the years and combine childhood favorites with updated techniques and flavors. We want each bite to transport you to a fond memory and bring a smile to your face. New recipes and ideas are tested for months to make sure they are ready for debut and just as they should be. And we take no greater pleasure than being a part of your daily routine or special occasion. When you enjoy one of our sticky buns each morning or one of our cakes at a family event, it makes us feel like part of the family… just another reason we love our job!
